I’m a certified health coach!! Now what? No really. Now what? Do I order business cards? Do I get a website? Do I use the website that my school provided or do I hire a webdesigner? How do I find a webdesigner? Do I write a book? Do I get a Facebook Fan Page? Do I have a specialty? Wait, I don’t have a specialty. I like everything about health. Should I talk about weight loss? Everyone wants to lose weight. How do I get clients? How will my clients know what I do if I’m not even sure what I do. Should I get another certification? How do I work with doctors? Do I even want to work with doctors? Fuck it, this certification is useless.
Did you go through this too? I sure did. I just wanted to share my knowledge of health with the world. I wanted to help people lose weight and change their lives all while defeating Monsanto!
It just doesn’t work out that way. There’s a ton of missteps. Lots of tweaking and adjusting. But most of all, health coaches and healers have to accept the dirty idea that our practices are businesses. That was a hard pill to swallow. Yes, it is common sense, but do we actually get this concept? If you are like me, the painful answer is no.
You see, I didn’t want health coaching to be about “business”. I wanted health coaching to be about health. I wanted to read books, listen to podcasts, and watch YouTube videos about health. I wanted to learn about gluten, GMO’s, and the latest fad diets. I didn’t want to read about marketing and search engine optimization. And there laid my biggest mistake.
Fact was, I already knew more about health and wellness than any of my clients would ever need to know. I was more than ready to serve them. What I needed to know was how to actually run my business. I was never going to get a client if I didn’t understand the elements of marketing. I was never going to look like I knew what I was doing if my website looked like crap. How could I make a living doing what I loved if I didn’t even know what to charge?
